The Shadow of Nixon’s Presidency on Trump’s Strategy

“Trump represents revenge, or an attempt at retribution, against all the forces that were enemies of Nixon and led to his downfall, viewing him as an outsider to the establishment, just as Trump is in his own way.

The federal bureaucracy, Harvard, The New York Times: these are 3 typical strongholds of the establishment that conspired against Nixon and are now against Trump“.

Niall Ferguson, highly regarded scholar and historian, particularly in economic history, and a former contributor of Newsweek, overturns the narrative that everything Donald Trump does is unprecedented.

“Journalists who use it are simply ignorant – Ferguson states – and do not study history”.

Effectively Richard Nixon dismantled the international economic order established in 1944 at Bretton Woods by Franklin Roosevelt through the dollar-gold parity.

He betrayed the allies by unilaterally declaring in 1971 the abandonment of the dollar’s convertibility into gold.

Nixon imposed protectionist tariffs. He referred to the allies as defense parasites. Similarly, Trump’s alleged attempt to reconcile with Vladimir Putin to pull Russia away from China’s embrace has been described as ‘a reversed Nixon‘ – a reference to the 1972 thaw with Mao Zedong that brought communist China into the American sphere of influence.

Niall Ferguson encourages a historical perspective when analyzing contemporary politics, and Roger Stone – a longtime political consultant and a former advisor to Donald Trump – has explicitly embraced Nixon’s legacy, both symbolically (with that famous Nixon tattoo) and strategically.
