It is a watershed moment for the dominant parties in Romania, PSD and PNL, whose candidates were eliminated in the first round.

The final results confirmed Călin Georgescu, leader of the center-right party USR, and Elena Lasconi, journalist and mayor of the town of Câmpulung, advancing to the runoff on December 8.

It is the first time that PSD has not sent its candidate to the runoff. The results of the vote leave the parliamentary elections scheduled for next Sunday (December 1) open to further surprises.

After the fall of the Communist regime in 1989, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) was founded in 1990. It claimed to be the successor of the historical Romanian Social Democratic Party.

The PSD is currently the largest political party in Romania. It has been part of various coalitions and has a significant influence on Romanian politics, but now it seems that the wind has changed. (Redazione)
