Rai Regione Sicilia, in a report by Duilio Calarco, issued news about the ‘shadow fleet’ of old tankers transporting Russian oil to Europe, including Italy, in the sea in front of Augusta, Melilli, and Priolo.
The fact was reported by Report TV magazine and founded on an investigation by Greenpeace.
Actually, the traffic has been well-known since The New York Times covered it in March 2022 (source Marinetraffic).
The famous media outlet traced the route with a ship stopping in the North Sea on March 6th, making a U-turn on March 22nd, and arriving in Sicily on April 1st, 2022.
The route resembled a sort of boot at that time.
One notable incident involved the oil tanker Seajewel, which experienced explosions while moored in Savona, Italy. The vessel was allegedly transporting Russian oil and was part of the shadow fleet.
The news is an old fact and more complex than Rai would present.
Now, it is related to a more complex situation, including terror and the reshaping of global routes and energy policies. (Sergio Scialabba)
